Doll Bones by Holly Black with illustrations by Eliza Wheeler is a fun read that I think any middle grade child will enjoy. The story takes three best friends, Zach, Poppy, and Alice, on an adventure to return a doll to its proper grave, with its parents who are long dead.
When the child died, the doll was made from its bones and Poppy believes it longs to be buried and it won't rest until it is. Of course, the friends have many adventures along the way and learn more about each other than they ever would have guessed. It kept me interested to the very end. This was a 2014 Newbury Honor book.
I give Doll Bones 4.5 out of 5 stars.
